A Lush Waterfront Escape by M.Hudson Design
A Vision Rooted in the Tropics
Our client partnered with M.Hudson Design to bring the essence of Bali to their newly remodeled waterfront home in North Palm Beach. After completely reimagining the residence inside and out, they sought a landscape that would mirror the same transformation—lush, refined, and inspired by the timeless beauty of tropical design.
The goal was to evoke the Bali Tropical aesthetic—a composition of layered greenery, natural texture, and serene rhythm. While this style typically flourishes in shaded gardens, this site offered the opposite: a sun-drenched, open expanse. Embracing the challenge, our team crafted a planting strategy that honored the vision while thriving in full sun, blending artistry and resilience in equal measure.
Character and Contrast
The driveway design set the stage for the home’s first impression—an elegant balance of old-world charm and coastal sophistication. The client envisioned crushed gravel in tones that echoed the home’s gray-and-white palette, deliberately steering away from warmer pea rock hues. To frame this surface, we introduced large double-border concrete cobblestones, bringing depth, texture, and timeless character to the entryway.
The result is a refined foundation that complements the architecture while hinting at the lush tropical haven awaiting beyond.
Tropical Abundance with Intention
In the front yard, we created a vibrant tapestry of tropical plantings chosen to thrive beneath the full westerly sun. Each species was selected for its structure, tone, and adaptability—ensuring a landscape that remains as lush and dynamic as its inspiration.
Along the sides of the home, where natural shade provided protection, we layered more delicate tropicals to capture the sense of intimacy found in true Balinese gardens. Between these garden rooms, we designed a hanging orchid wall—a living art piece framed between windows and paired with 2’ x 2’ stepping stones set in matching gravel from the driveway. This thoughtful continuity unites form and texture, adding a touch of quiet enchantment to the journey through the landscape.
Minimalism with a View
At the rear of the property, the design softened into a more minimalist tropical composition, allowing the property’s breathtaking water views to remain uninterrupted. To frame the horizon, we craned in three magnificent 30-foot Maypan Coconut palms, their canopies perfectly aligned to preserve the view from the second-story balcony.
The landscape beneath was refined with high-end artificial turf, offering a crisp, modern canvas that contrasts beautifully against the organic texture of medium Mexican beach pebbles placed around the palms. This tranquil composition blends restraint with richness, creating a natural rhythm that draws the eye gently toward the water.
