A New Beginning in the Tropics
Our clients partnered with M.Hudson Design to reimagine the landscape and hardscape of their newly purchased South Florida home. Their goal was to create an outdoor environment that would reflect the timeless beauty of their classic plantation-style architecture while enhancing functionality for their young family.
One of their main priorities was transforming the backyard into a more usable, family-friendly space. Frequent flooding from the rear tidal pond left much of the lawn soggy and unusable after storms. In addition to resolving these challenges, they wanted a cohesive design that complemented their home’s architecture—uniting classic formality with a relaxed, tropical sensibility perfect for family life.
Classic Form, Welcoming Simplicity
As you approach the property, the curvilinear driveway gently winds toward a magnificent Banyan tree—a living centerpiece that grounds the design in both scale and character. We embraced its grandeur by creating a shade garden and walking path beneath its canopy, transforming it into a peaceful retreat for the family to enjoy.
To highlight the home’s architecture, we removed two mature magnolia trees that had long crowded the entry, creating a brighter, more inviting approach. The clean and colorful planting design enhances the home’s plantation charm, offering balance, texture, and a sense of timeless southern grace.
Fresh Structure and Classic Details
Along the sides of the home, we renewed the structure of the property by replacing aged arbors, gates, and fencing, bringing back the crispness of form. Each new arbor was planted with Confederate jasmine, adding fragrance and softness that naturally complement the architectural lines.

Classic Proportions, Tropical Flourish
We framed the rear property with dense tropical buffers, providing privacy while embracing two mature plumeria trees as sculptural focal points. Around their bases, layers of flowering shrubs and low tropical groundcovers add texture, fragrance, and seasonal color.
The pool deck design continues the architectural rhythm of the home, bordered with artificial turf strips that frame the classic pool shape with a clean, modern contrast. Adjacent to the pool, a custom Ipe wood outdoor shower was designed as both a statement feature and a practical luxury—perfect for rinsing off after a swim or an afternoon of play.
