A Linear Vision for Modern Living
This waterfront residence underwent a full-scale renovation, transitioning from its original Mediterranean character to a clean, contemporary architectural style. Working alongside the architect, M. Hudson Design reimagined the landscape to complement the home’s new linear geometry—balancing structure, simplicity, and warmth.
The design approach focused on proportion and rhythm: long, clipped hedges that draw the eye, soft vertical accents to balance the architecture, and a restrained palette of textures and greens to create depth without clutter. The result is a cohesive, modern composition that feels calm, confident, and timeless.
Modern Geometry Meets Function
The front approach was designed around strict POA and city requirements, including the placement of large oak trees and limitations on hardscape coverage. Every element was positioned with precision to preserve the home’s central view axis while adhering to a maximum 35% hardscape allowance.
A silver travertine marble driveway establishes an elegant tone at arrival, while gravel pathways extend to the golf cart garage—an inventive solution that met lot coverage limits without compromising design integrity. The overall arrangement reflects deliberate restraint, with a focus on clean lines and refined balance.
Tranquility in Tight Spaces
At the heart of the property lies a tight central courtyard, where M. Hudson Design collaborated closely with Pool Crafters to integrate a pool and sun shelf that align perfectly with the architecture’s strong geometry. Every inch was considered—from the angle of the chaise lounges to the rhythm of the steps—to maximize both function and aesthetic flow.
Framing the courtyard, staggered Solitaire palms and structured hedges provide privacy from neighboring properties while softening rooflines and hard edges. The intimate scale of the courtyard makes every design decision intentional, transforming limited space into an experience of calm proportion.
Simplicity as the Ultimate Luxury
The landscape design embraces a “green-on-green” philosophy, where subtle tonal variations and clean horizontal layering define the space. Low border hedges, vertical palms, and precise groundcover accents create visual rhythm without distraction.
In the rear, Silvestre Date Palms frame expansive views of the water and add dramatic scale. The entire property features high-end artificial turf, providing a crisp, low-maintenance foundation that emphasizes the architectural lines and connects the outdoor spaces seamlessly.
This project’s defining statement lies in its clarity of form—achieved through the alignment of architecture, landscape, and site constraints. The S-shaped front entry, a recurring M. Hudson Design signature, introduces a subtle sense of discovery, curving the path just enough to create privacy before arrival at the gate.
The team also navigated complex lot coverage regulations, blending gravel and paver materials to meet code while maintaining design integrity. In the courtyard, the careful layering of hedges and staggered palms provides privacy from neighboring views, while in the rear, the Silvestre Date Palms and dock enhancements frame a breathtaking connection to the water.
