Floral Mediterranean Renewal

A Vibrant Landscape Transformation by M. Hudson Design

Project Overview

Reviving Classic Elegance with Color and Structure

This Mediterranean residence was preparing for a new architectural addition and needed a refreshed landscape to match its evolving presence. The existing 20-year-old plantings had become dated and fragmented, dulling the home’s curb appeal and symmetry.

M. Hudson Design was brought in to reimagine the landscape from the ground up—preserving mature trees and key architectural features while introducing new layers of planting design that bring balance, color, and clarity to the property. The result is a cohesive composition that feels both timeless and renewed, perfectly complementing the home’s Mediterranean character.

Color, Symmetry, and Layered Balance

The design began by re-establishing symmetry and scale at the front entry. Two original Medjool Date Palms had previously dominated the space, throwing the courtyard off balance. M. Hudson Design introduced two smaller companion palms, staggered in height, to create a graceful tiered rhythm leading to the entry.

The new planting palette celebrates floral vibrancy and texture—with bands of red and white seasonal color woven through green structure. Magnolia palms were introduced to provide privacy between homes while maintaining visual softness, and Sylvester Date Palms anchor the driveway side for balance.

Existing oaks were preserved and enhanced with naturalized understory plantings, while fresh floral beds bring warmth and movement to the entire frontage. Every zone was carefully redefined to introduce cohesion, proportion, and flow.

Planting Strategy & Community Integration

Signature Features

As a landscape-only project, the focus was entirely on horticultural design and visual harmony. The community’s architectural guidelines required natural Zoysia grass—prohibiting artificial turf—so precision in bed shaping, layering, and maintenance detailing was essential to achieve the clean, high-end finish des red.

Each plant species was selected for scale, color, and rhythm, building a garden that feels lush yet organized. The final arrangement introduces a stronger visual identity to the home’s frontage, offering a colorful, welcoming approach year-round.

Signature Features & Design Challenges

The defining statement of this project lies in its tiered palm composition and seasonal floral framework—a subtle orchestration of structure and color that restores balance to the home’s approach.

Challenges included integrating the landscape with a planned rear addition and ensuring visual continuity once future construction is complete. The design was crafted with foresight—allowing the new courtyard and back gardens to align seamlessly with the refreshed frontage once built. The result is a property that now radiates cohesion, warmth, and refined vibrancy, demonstrating how thoughtful planting design alone can transform an entire home’s presence.
