A Refined Expression of Modern Coastal Living
For this custom residence on the Intracoastal Waterway in Jupiter, Florida, M Hudson Design was engaged from the very beginning—collaborating with the builder, architect, and client through the full design and construction process. The project was a complete teardown and rebuild, conceived as a modern, sculptural home with sweeping water views and a highly linear architectural form.
Our role was to design the entire landscape—from front entry to waterfront edge—so that it would enhance the architecture’s precision while softening its modern lines with layered greenery, contrast, and proportion. The result is a hybrid modern-classic landscape defined by clarity, balance, and restraint.
Structure, Symmetry, and Subtle Contrast
The design reflects the home’s clean, modern geometry while introducing subtle rhythm and texture. Along the streetscape, clipped hedges and symmetrical compositions bring order and refinement—consistent with the contemporary trend of structured landscapes punctuated by foliage contrast.
Because the home features low windows and horizontal cladding, the plantings remain low and deliberate, maintaining open views to the architecture. The palette relies on strong lines, layered hedges, and fine-textured greens punctuated by occasional flowering trees and leafy tropicals for visual depth.
To add individuality, we introduced sculptural art pieces near the entry modern accents that complement the home’s architecture and provide a refined artistic statement.
Precision Framing for Architectural Clarity
The hardscape palette was chosen for simplicity and consistency with the home’s architecture. The driveway and walkways were finished in concrete pavers, while sand-set marble defined the pool terrace and rear patio—materials that balance tone and texture without distraction.
A key design challenge was managing the three-and-a-half to four-foot elevation change from the pool terrace down to the dock. Working with the builder and contractor, M Hudson Design specified a series of retaining walls and grade adjustments to create a smooth, unified flow across the backyard. This technical solution allowed the infinity-edge pool to sit seamlessly at grade while maintaining connection to the waterfront deck.
Sculptural Simplicity and Seamless Flow
The custom-designed pool serves as the defining feature of the backyard. Designed around the home’s architectural footprint, rather than a central axis, it includes a sun shelf with bubblers and an integrated submerged spa—each oriented toward the Intracoastal for unobstructed views.
The infinity edge pulls the eye outward, merging pool and waterway into a single visual plane. Despite the compact footprint, the pool and terrace feel expansive, emphasizing proportion, reflection, and connection rather than scale. This composition—pool, terrace, and dock working in concert—became the signature element of the property, embodying modern simplicity with technical precision.
Balancing Openness and Seclusion
Although the backyard opens to the water, the adjacent homes’ pools aligned closely on either side, requiring thoughtful screening. M Hudson Design used Podocarpus hedging down both property lines, providing six to eight feet of privacy without closing in the space. Coconut palms were positioned throughout the rear landscape to create vertical rhythm and anchor the views.
Plantings remain clean and understated—green on green, finely textured, and proportioned to complement the home’s sculptural geometry. The rear lawn was minimized, with most space dedicated to the pool and terrace, reinforcing the property’s sleek, functional design.
Illuminating Form and Texture
A minimalist lighting approach was implemented to complement the architecture’s restraint. Uplighting on coconut palms and low path lighting along walkways provide subtle glow and dimension at night, enhancing form and structure without competing with the home’s clean lines.
The result is a quiet, architectural illumination that enhances the property’s modern calm and evening atmosphere.
Modern Form, Functional Flow
The infinity-edge pool and its seamless transition to the waterfront deck define the identity of this residence. The combination of level changes, precision retaining walls, and sculptural planting make this compact site feel spacious and serene.
From the sculptural entry accents to the balanced rear geometry, every element reinforces the design’s focus on proportion, line, and flow. The effect is understated but deliberate—a landscape where modern architecture and natural movement coexist in perfect balance.
