For this newly constructed residence in Palm Beach Gardens, M Hudson Design was commissioned to develop a complete landscape and hardscape plan to address a steeply sloped lot that left the backyard unusable. The goal was to craft a space that was as functional as it was beautiful—an outdoor environment that reflected the home’s modern architecture while offering balance, structure, and livability.
Through collaboration, technical expertise, and persistence in securing multiple approvals, M Hudson Design transformed the site into a level, cohesive retreat—proof that thoughtful design can turn even the most challenging site conditions into opportunities for elegance.
Subtle Engineering, Lasting Impact
The defining challenge of this property was its significant grade change. M Hudson Design identified that the only way to achieve a usable lawn and outdoor living area was to introduce a retaining wall, modest in scale yet critical in function. The team coordinated extensively with FPL, gas, and cable providers, as well as the community’s HOA, to obtain all necessary approvals for this essential design feature.
Once completed, the retaining wall reshaped the property, creating a flat, usable terrace that expanded the livable area of the home. What began as a constraint became the defining strength of the design—an engineered solution elevated through artistry and proportion.
Structure, Balance, and Practical Beauty
The newly leveled backyard was finished with artificial turf, chosen for its durability and clean aesthetic. Existing palms were strategically relocated to frame the space and establish vertical rhythm, while new plantings of flowering shrubs and groundcovers softened the geometry of the retaining wall and fences.
Across the property, M Hudson Design pursued harmony between order and ease—favoring strong lines, cohesive layering, and restrained color. The front and side yards mirror that same sensibility, with emerald groundcover, ornamental grasses, and low, textural plantings that flow naturally into the open backyard. The result is a landscape that feels seamless, refined, and inviting from every angle.

Pathway and accent lighting highlights the palms and the clean lines of the architecture, reinforcing the landscape’s structure without overwhelming it. The result is a quiet, ambient glow that allows the form of the design to remain the focus.
