A Complete Outdoor Transformation by M. Hudson Design
Redefining the Modern Mediterranean Lifestyle
This expansive Mediterranean estate underwent a total backyard transformation designed to bring luxury, function, and balance to outdoor living. The original layout placed the pool uncomfortably close to the home, limiting both space and usability. M. Hudson Design reimagined the entire area—relocating and rebuilding the pool, expanding entertainment zones, and creating a seamless flow between multiple levels and seating areas.
The new design honors the home’s Mediterranean architecture while introducing transitional detailing and crisp organization. Every element—hardscape, landscape, and lighting—was thoughtfully planned to maximize views of the lake and golf course while preserving privacy and intimacy throughout.
A custom fire pit and seating wall anchor the entertainment area, while a surrounding privacy wall provides enclosure and comfort from nearby golf course views. The interplay of structure and openness gives the backyard a sense of resort-like refinement.
Layers of Luxury and Functionality
At the heart of the design lies a new elevated pool and spa, repositioned farther from the house to open the space and enhance sun exposure. This elevation shift created an opportunity for a custom spill-edge feature, where water cascades gracefully toward the home, uniting the upper and lower terraces in rhythm and sound.
Surrounding the pool, multiple paver inlay patterns and decorative gravel bands define distinct outdoor zones—from sun lounges to intimate fire-side gatherings. A sun shelf and integrated spa complete the poolscape, inviting relaxation throughout the day.
Refined Function Meets Design Precision
The outdoor kitchen was completely reimagined for flow and usability. The previous U-shaped layout was replaced with a sleek, linear bar that houses a grill, sink, and pass-through counter, encouraging interaction between guests and hosts. The space features new black tile finishes, refinished hood detailing, and custom roll-down screen systems engineered to enclose the area seamlessly while maintaining drainage and gutter integration.
Even behind the scenes, precision mattered—the screen structure was custom-attached to both gutter and fascia to manage water flow, ensuring beauty and durability worked hand-in-hand.
Bold Form and Balanc ed Softness
The planting design reinforces the property’s geometry with a structured yet tropical composition. Canary Island Date Palms and Silver Bismarck Palms serve as grand focal points, their presence accentuated by dramatic uplighting at night. Layers of textural plantings and clean hedge lines bring softness without obscuring views.
Artificial turf inlays provide crisp contrast to paver fields, adding color and low-maintenance precision to the overall design. Privacy is subtly achieved through strategic hedge placement and focal palms, maintaining openness toward the golf course while shielding seating areas from direct view.
Refined Function Meets Design Precision
The most distinctive element of this project is the multi-level pool integration, which elegantly resolves the home’s dual interior floor elevations through a thoughtful interplay of steps, spillways, and water levels. This elevation strategy not only introduced movement and sound but also redefined the backyard’s spatial hierarchy.
Equally defining are the custom artificial green walls—a creative response to deep shade conditions where living plants couldn’t thrive. These lush, vertical installations provide year-round texture and color while softening the architecture of the outdoor kitchen and lounge areas. Their sculptural presence adds a fresh, contemporary counterpoint to the home’s Mediterranean character.
Combined with the refined screen engineering, decorative paver inlays, and fire feature composition, these layered design elements express the M. Hudson Design philosophy: technical precision meeting timeless elegance. The result is a backyard that feels both architecturally cohesive and resort-inspired, transforming every detail into an experience.
