For this private residence, M Hudson Design was commissioned to transform an aging tropical landscape into a sleek, contemporary retreat that complements the home’s newly remodeled interior.
Originally built during the early 2000s Mediterranean boom, the property reflected the popular tropical style of its era. Over time, the exterior design and hardscape no longer aligned with the homeowner’s modern aesthetic or lifestyle. Following a complete interior renovation, the client sought a comprehensive outdoor redesign that would restore harmony, elegance, and function for both everyday living and family gatherings.
The resulting design replaced overgrown plantings with clean geometry, balanced proportion, and refined
restraint—a complete renewal of the home’s outdoor experience.
From Classic Tropical to Modern Refinement
The design approach centered on modernizing the landscape while preserving a few mature palms that framed the architecture beautifully.
M Hudson Design simplified the composition, removing dense foliage that had once enclosed the property and replacing it with structure and light. A large oak near the drive was replaced with a silver buttonwood, chosen for its sculptural form and compatibility with the home’s updated style.
The refreshed palette embraced linear design, natural balance, and understated color—a reflection of contemporary tropical design at its most elegant.
Marble, Porcelain, and the Geometry of Balance
The hardscape palette combines natural marble and porcelain pavers, tying together the property’s architecture with timeless materials.
The driveway was reconstructed in natural marble, lending depth and refinement to the home’s entry. The pool terrace, finished in porcelain tile, carries the same precision and clarity through the rear of the property.
At the center, a rectangular deck-level pool with a 360-degree spillover spa forms a sculptural focal point. LED lighting and a linear fire strip across the pool’s water feature add subtle movement and reflection—a seamless blend of fire, water, and proportion.
Simplified Structure, Subtle Color
Nearly all existing vegetation was reimagined to create a cleaner, more balanced composition. Two established palms were retained to maintain scale and maturity, while low hedging and flowering bougainvillea were used to bring vibrancy without visual clutter.
Along the property line, an eight-foot privacy hedge screens the neighboring pool area, ensuring comfort and seclusion. The opposite side remains naturally enclosed by the home’s architecture.
At the rear, the design opens to sweeping marshland and water views, framed by two signature palms and a low hedge—a minimalist composition that celebrates the surrounding landscape.
A Living Wall and a Fire-Touched Waterline
Two signature features define this property: the living wall and the fire-integrated pool design. The living wall, visible from the breakfast room, transforms a once-blank wall into a living piece of art—the first of its kind installed by M Hudson Design. This vertical garden softens the modern structure and connects the home’s interior with nature.
In the backyard, the deck-level pool features a 360 spillover spa, LED illumination, and a linear fire strip along the waterfall edge. Together, these elements create a sensory experience of balance and serenity.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection
M Hudson Design redesigned the outdoor kitchen to echo the interior’s modern aesthetic. Working closely with the interior designer. every finish and texture was selected to achieve perfect continuity

Lighting across the property was designed to enhance atmosphere rather than overwhelm it. Soft uplighting on palms, pathway illumination, and integrated LED features within the pool and spa bring the landscape to life after sunset with a refined, resort-quality glow.
